History
Originally home to two of the 14 Nations of the Nuu‑chah‑nulth people—the Tseshaht and Hupacasath—Port Alberni has deep roots that long predate its modern development. With the rise of the region’s lumber industry and its strategic port access, the area grew into a thriving hub of commerce and community life.
For many years, the region existed as “twin cities,” but after the devastating 1964 Good Friday earthquake and tsunami struck and reshaped both towns, they united and rebuilt as one resilient community.
